In the summer, people come here because there is lots do do (see our summer programming here). In the winter, people come because there is nothing to do.
Picture a cozy fireplace, stunning views over a frozen lake, and a creamy cappuccino in hand. You can dive into your favourite page-turner, watch the birds forage in snow drifts, or challenge your travel partner to a game of travel.
Board games, books and movies: we have a small library of games, books and movies, waiting for you to use. Unlike most libraries, you don’t have to sign them out.
1885: our cozy winter hub, breakfast hall, and restaurant. Self-serve coffee, tea, hot chocolate and snacks are available all day here. You can curl up on a sofa or play a game of table tennis or darts – 1885 is a lounge for relaxing and reconnecting.
Hiking trails: our 9 km of hiking trails are your path to wildlife – deer, birds and hares are often spotted here. The snow can be deep, so consider borrowing a pair of our snowshoes to really enjoy it. If you’d rather have someone show you the way, we do a guided hike on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10 am.
Snowshoes, skates and skis: Our collection of snowshoes and skis are available first come, first served. Just like our library, there are no sign-outs, all we ask is that you bring them back when you’re done. If you plan on skating, please check ice conditions with the front desk first.
Indoor pool and fitness centre: While we highly recommend taking some time to be lazy while you’re here, if you really want to get moving, our fitness centre has a selection of free weights, weight machines, treadmills and elliptical machines. Our indoor pool features a swim-out heated outdoor portion, sauna and steamroom.
Wine tasting: Every Friday and Saturday at 4:30 pm, we host a drinks tasting. It could be wine, scotch, beer or liquor, but it is always delicious and interesting.
Be a tourist: the Kawarthas region has a wealth of cultural experiences waiting for you to explore. Ask us for our favourite suggestions.
Fill your belly: a trip to Viamede is not complete without a special locavore meal. Whether you explore fine food that reflects our pioneer roots at Mount Julian, or enjoy a classically casual dinner at 1885, you’re in for an incredible experience.
